Celebrating Canterbury’s Tri-Centennial BIRTHDAY

Initial discussions have been held by the Society’s trustees contemplating how the town might celebrate our 300th birthday in 2027. A town wide invitation will be extended in the spring inviting everyone to attend a meeting to discuss ideas on how we can do this. It’s not too early to think about ideas, what might be yours?!

ANNUAL MEETING ON NOVEMBER 15TH!

Mark your calendar to attend our annual meeting on November 15th at 7 P.M. in the town hall when we will be presenting a program and voting to fill 3 vacancies on our board of trustees. Have you ever considered becoming involved in the Society? Contact Bob Scarponi, or Pam Jackson if you would like more information about being a trustee.

EXHIBIT OPEN

Our current exhibit featuring selected items from our Archive Collection will be open on October 7th and the 14th in the Elkins Memorial Building from 10 A.M. to noon. Please stop by and see things like the Civil War “dog tag” worn by a Canterbury soldier in 1862, Canterbury store history and photos, U.S. presidential documents and a letter from President Eisenhower to the town congratulating us on the building of the elementary school.

HISTORIC HOUSES PROJECT

Trustees Harry Kinter and Jeff Leidinger are compiling historic house information on 80 plus Canterbury old houses which they are photographing and documenting. They plan to publish a first edition book featuring 40 houses in the coming days

ORAL HISTORIES TO RESUME

Trustee Mary Ann Winograd, together with our curator, Sam Papps, is coordinating the resumption of our oral history project to record long time Canterbury resident’s recollections from the past. This vital project was long delayed by Covid. The recordings will become part of our archive collection.
