BRAND NEW HISTORICAL SOCIETY EXHIBIT OPENS ON FAIR DAY

“Contemporary And Old” might be used to describe the contents of the Historical Society’s new exhibit entitled “Historical Society Eclectic” which will open on Canterbury Fair Day, Saturday July 29th in the Elkins Memorial Building (former library). We have chosen a wide variety of objects from our Archive Collection, many of which have never been on display before. For example, a wonderful photograph of Shaker Eldress Bertha Lindsay, taken by noted N. H.photographer Bill Finney; several items relating to the many stores (and owners of stores in the center), and even the original “Peterson’s Country Store” sign that hung on the store in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s! Also, you’ll see two original watercolor paintings, one of Shaker Village and the other of the Country Store when gas pumps were still installed; a Shaker style rocking chair made by Canterbury master woodworkers Brian Braskie and Lenore Howe, along with Brian’s “Shaker Finial Puzzle Board” (which we challenge you to solve); items dating from the Civil War including the “Identific ation Tag” which was worn by Canterbury soldier Henry McDaniel in 1861.There are many other items to see, so come and enjoy! The exhibit will be open from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. and admission is free.
