Folks who pass by the Houser One Room Schoolhouse on Old Tilton Road might have recently noticed that the sign on the building, “Canterbury Historical Society”, is missing from the façade. It has been removed for a fresh coat of paint, but it’s removal reminded us of when it was first installed, in April of 2000. Please find attached a few snaps from the Archives of the “sign installers”, Fifield brothers Olly and Stuart, and the artist who painted the sign, Jim Lilly – as well as the Historians of 2000 who had their names inscribed on the reverse of the sign for posterity!

It is the Center Schoolhouse. MS Houser was a teacher at the school and the museum in the schoolhouse was named for her.
One Room School Hoping this email will get to the whole board. I just want to let you know the schoolhouse is in great shape to welcome the Canterbury School classes starting this week, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and next week Tuesday and Wednesday. Jeff has been in again to clean and I stopped in yesterday to find everything all set up for Monday morning. Each desk contains a new journal marked with each child’s name and grade, a slate, and a dictionary for the older kids. Assignments are written on the chalk boards. It looks wonderful and would warm your hearts! Dale and Chuck plan to be there to greet the kids and help Karen as they can. They encourage Board members to come in early – maybe about 8:30 – just to see it and stay on to observe if you’d like to. I guarantee it will make you smile. The kids will be walking down the hill to arrive around 9:00. Hope some of you can make it. Also let me mention that the service for Joan Legget at the church yesterday was wonderful. She was such a major player in getting the one room school program going. We are forever grateful for the joy she took in being so instrumental and productive with her help. Anne
