Our Mission:
The purpose of the Tricentennial Committee is to lead the town in a yearlong celebration that commemorates Canterbury’s three-hundred-year history (1727 – 2027), engages all Canterbury residents, and celebrates Canterbury’s heritage and enduring tradition of community spirit.
Oversight & Membership:
The Tricentennial Committee is a sub-committee of the Canterbury Historical Society, and shall be comprised of local community volunteers, including one or more members of the Board of Selectmen. The Committee will periodically share progress with and report to the Canterbury Historical Society for concurrence and guidance on plans and activities. The Committee will also communicate with the Board of Selectmen to share information and seek approval when needed.
Key Activities & Tasks:
- Plan, manage, and deliver a series of events and activities for the cultural, educational, and recreational benefit of the community that will serve to commemorate Canterbury’s heritage and lead to a greater awareness and appreciation of our history.
- Conduct outreach to and solicit input from the community on events and activities residents would be interested in attending, volunteering for, and participating in.
- Partner with local businesses, schools, non-profits, and town departments to cultivate events that appeal to a wide array of residents and friends.
- Encourage and support other community groups and organizations to embrace the Tricentennial theme and conduct activities and hold events that highlight their own group’s mission and their connections to Canterbury.
- Establish a committee plan, team assignments, and activity schedules to track progress, needs, and challenges leading up to the Tricentennial celebration.
- Establish budgetary needs and develop a strategy to fundraise and obtain sponsorship for the Tricentennial, as well as manage associated financials.
- Develop a strategy for and establish a communications plan (e.g., email, newsletter(s), postings, signs, online presence) to share committee progress, solicit and track feedback, and promote interest in activities leading up to and during the Tricentennial celebration year.
- Create a master calendar of events and develop marketing materials to highlight and outline information about the events associated with and hosted by the Tricentennial Committee, its partners, and friends of Canterbury.
- Provide progress updates, request guidance, and obtain concurrence for events and activities that warrant Historical Society and Town oversight and approval.
