New Exhibit opening on Fair Day!

Visit the Elkins Memorial building on Fair Day. Our new Canterbury Historical Society exhibit will feature items from our collection not seen in years, and some not ever seen! The show is called, “Historical Society Eclectic” and will have items dating from the Civil War including the “Identification Tag” which belonged to Canterbury soldier Henry McDaniel;  several contemporary paintings/watercolors featuring the Canterbury Country Store and Shaker Village; a Shaker style rocking chair made by Canterbury master woodworkers Brian Braskie and Lenore Howe along with Brian’s “Shaker Finial Puzzle Board” (which we challenge you to solve); the Worsted Church, farm tools made in Canterbury in the mid 19^th century; William Hubbard’s postmaster appointment certificate signed by President Eisenhower, letter signed by President Eisenhower congratulating  townspeople on building the elementary school through volunteer labor  and so much more! 

One Room School House Open Fair Day!

Also, make it a point to visit the Houser Center One Room Schoolhouse built in 1843. It will be open all day. Come and see where, even today, all our elementary schoolchildren come to experience what attending school was like in Canterbury until 1956 when our elementary school was built. All are welcome!  

We are in the process uploading photos taken from the albums of all the productions of the  Canterbury Players Gilbert& Sullivan shows presented in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Many folks have fond memories of attending these shows featuring Canterbury residents performing (as best they could), with proceeds going to build the Bandstand on the green. A perfect example of Canterbury folks coming together. You will see many familiar faces, some of whom have sadly have left us. It will be a great visit! Click here to see what we have done thus far!
